Growing in Christ: Your First Steps as a New Believer
Congratulations! You've given your life to Christ. Now what? This isn't the end—it's the beginning of the most amazing adventure of your life. Let's talk about how to grow strong in your faith.
The Foundation: Three Daily Practices
Think of your spiritual life like building a house. You need a strong foundation. These three practices are non-negotiable for every Christian who wants to grow:
1. Reading the Bible Daily
The Bible isn't just another book—it's God speaking to you. Without it, you have no foundation, no direction, and no protection from deception.
- Begin with the Gospel of John (in the New Testament)
- Read at least one chapter per day—aim for 15-30 minutes
- Ask God to speak to you as you read
- Take notes on what stands out to you
- Don't just read to gain knowledge—read to know Jesus and follow Him
One believer spent 3-5 hours a day reading the Bible in his early months as a Christian. That might not be your season, but the principle is clear: the more time you spend in God's Word, the faster you'll grow.
2. Prayer: More Than Just Asking for Things
Prayer isn't a religious duty—it's talking with your Father. It's the key to seeing God's will happen in your life.
Jesus said this to disciples who had been with Him for 3 years. If you've been a Christian for 3 years, can you pray for an hour? This isn't to shame you—it's to show you how important prayer is.
- Start small: If you've never prayed more than 5 minutes, start with 15 minutes
- Find a quiet place: Jesus went to secluded places to pray—find your spot
- Don't just talk—listen: After you pray, be quiet and let God speak
- Keep a journal: Write down what you sense God saying
- Work up to an hour: This should be your goal as you mature
What to Pray About:
- Praise and Worship: Tell God how amazing He is
- Thanksgiving: Thank Him for specific blessings
- Confession: Admit your sins and ask for forgiveness
- Requests: Ask according to His will, not just your wants
- Intercession: Pray for others—family, friends, leaders
- Listening: Be quiet and let the Holy Spirit speak
3. Worship and Praise
Before you pray, before you read, start with worship. Put on worship music. Sing to God. Thank Him. This puts your heart in the right place.
- 6:00-6:20 AM: Worship and praise (songs, thanksgiving)
- 6:20-6:40 AM: Prayer (listening, asking, interceding)
- 6:40-7:10 AM: Bible reading and meditation
- 7:10-7:30 AM: Exercise while praying or listening to audio Bible
Adjust this to fit your schedule, but make it a priority!
The Power of the Holy Spirit
You're not doing this alone. When you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit came to live inside you. He's your Helper, Teacher, and Guide.
How the Holy Spirit Helps You:
- He teaches you: As you read the Bible, He reveals truth
- He reminds you: When you're tempted, He brings Scripture to mind
- He guides you: He shows you what to do in every situation
- He empowers you: You can't overcome sin by yourself—He gives you strength
- He speaks to you: Through that still, small voice in your spirit
- He produces fruit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
Get Connected: You Need Other Believers
Christianity isn't a solo sport. God designed you to be part of a family—the body of Christ.
Why You Need a Church:
- Encouragement: Other believers will strengthen your faith
- Accountability: They'll help you stay on track
- Teaching: God has given pastors and teachers to help you grow
- Community: You'll make friends who share your values
- Service: You'll find ways to use your gifts to help others
- Look for a church that teaches the Bible (not just motivational talks)
- Find people who genuinely love Jesus and live it out
- Look for evidence of the Holy Spirit working (changed lives, not just programs)
- Avoid churches that contradict Scripture or add extra books to the Bible
- Find a place where you can serve and grow, not just attend
Be Faithful in Small Things
You might have big dreams of preaching to thousands or doing great things for God. That's wonderful! But here's the truth: God tests your faithfulness in small things first.
Maybe God has you:
- Setting up chairs at church
- Running sound equipment
- Cleaning up after service
- Taking out the garbage at home
- Being kind to difficult people
- Doing your job with excellence even though you don't like it
Don't despise these tasks! This is where God is building your character. Do everything—EVERYTHING—as if you're doing it for Jesus, not for people.
Avoiding the Checklist Trap
Here's a dangerous place many Christians fall into: doing spiritual things without love.
You can read your Bible—check. Pray for 30 minutes—check. Go to church—check. But if there's no love, no joy, no relationship with God, it's all worthless.
The First Commandment:
Everything flows from loving God. Not using Him to get what you want. Not serving Him to earn points. Just loving Him for who He is.
